If you are wondering how to get started in music production. How to create songs from A to Z without struggling, or if you want to discover the techniques of digital music production. Or even the essentials to compose your songs, the following should please you…

We are going to see 6 fundamental aspects, the pillars to absolutely master music production. This way, you can flourish, even if you start from scratch …

Let’s go!

I – Learn to compose pieces by mastering the overall process of music production:

To create a piece of electronic music, you must follow several steps (in the right order if possible!)…

You start by developing an idea that serves as a starting point (design phase or rapid brainstorming in a way).

Then, you move on to the technical aspects of musical creation:

– Choose your main instruments,

– Sequence them to compose rhythmic and melodic patterns,

– Add lighter and punctual ambient sounds,

– Add effects and / or treatments to the instruments,

– Precisely adjust the volume of the tracks,

– Export the baby…

II – Learn to compose beautiful melodies to improve music production skills:

The melodies and the accompanying instruments / sounds (such as chord progression, bass, strings, etc.) are very important for several reasons …

Already, this is what will give “color” to your tracks, we can say personality in a way, with more beautiful / sophisticated / original sounds or even more varied than the percussion sounds. for example…

The melodies will use a much wider range of notes than the percussion does, and that makes the song more “special”, more “characteristic”, more “different” from the other tracks.

Most of the time, we can more easily remember a song by its melody than by its percussive rhythm, or by its “secondary” sounds …

Something to know about creating melodies: of course, knowing something about music theory helps …

But we can also try (and get good results) without having music theory lessons (which may seem downright boring for some people!).

The trick is to follow a step-by-step methodology to get there, and to know tips that serve as shortcuts, even “hacks” so that in the end your melodies sound downright good …

III – Learn to create your own instruments:

This step is interesting if you want to have your own sound signature, your own style, with indentities and sounds that no one else has.

Often, artists will recover ready-made sound banks (with kicks, leads, bass sounds …) to use them as they are, or by modifying them slightly.

The advantage of working like this is that you save time, in the sense that you don’t need to create everything by yourself …

On the other hand, you have to find (and in some cases buy) these sound banks, and agree to work with the same raw material as anyone else!

For more than 10 years, I have only worked with sounds that I created myself, with exceptions such as voices for example.

Synthesizing my kicks, creating everything from nothing, and developing a unique identity are part of my things, and my way of working.

IV – Learn how to arrange your songs correctly:

To create a song that sounds good is to manage the evolution of energy well throughout the arrangement (that means over the entire length of the song).

The experience you accumulate by composing dozens of tracks, but also by mixing on turntables (if you are a DJ, but if you live on Ableton Live for example, the principle is the same) helps you a lot to understand better what works …

Getting to adjust the duration, the ideal timing for each part of a song, it’s quite an art!

There are techniques which help you to put pressure on the dance floor, to capture the attention of listeners when necessary, or even to “hypnotize” them if this is an aspect which corresponds to your musical style. …

V – Learn how to record and edit any sound properly:

Audio recording is a crucial discipline to master, even if you don’t plan to work with “real” musicians live!

Because knowing how to record sounds is not only making studio shots, but also:

– Capture surrounding sounds (door noise slamming, bird cries, your friend vomiting his 9th beer …),

– Sampling existing instruments or tones of songs (“ripping” a vinyl or a CD for example, or extracting a sample from a WAVE file),

– Recover the voice of a film, a cartoon, or even a documentary …

Knowing how to make a success of your recordings therefore allows you to multiply your possibilities to succeed your musical productions…

That goes with mastering audio editing techniques (at least the basics), in order to refine and optimize the final rendering!

VI – Learn how to create remixes, mashups and re-edits:

The 6th step to master the technical basics of music production is to take one or more pieces already created by other artists, and make a new version.

Creating a remix, for example, is working with the separate instrumental tracks to remake a song. Use the kick, vocals, violin, synth of the original song to get a new version:

– Structured differently (breaks / drops / elements placed at other times for example),

– Add effects / treatments changed from the original version (for example: adding a delay to a melody, driving sounds…)

– Change the BPM, even the music style can be completely turned upside down …

Mashups and re-edits are more useful for DJs who want to stand out from their competitors. For example one including surprises in their new versions to amaze their audience…
